The methods and compounds you use to clean your carpets have a huge bearing on the durability and appearance of those carpets. It is therefore very important for you to select cleaning methods and cleaning agents that will preserve the pristine condition of your carpet for the longest possible time. This article discusses two cleaning methods that help to preserve the appearance of your carpet for a long time.
Steam Cleaning
This method is also known as hot water extraction. It entails applying a fine spray of water (steam) containing a cleaning solution onto the carpet. The steam absorbs the dirt in the carpet and a vacuum is then used to suck out the steam and dirt. The carpet takes a relatively short time to dry (4 hours, for example) because very little water was used in the cleaning process.
This cleaning method is good for your carpets because it reduces the rate at which the fibers in your carpet wear out. This is because the minimal amount of water involved prevents the fibers from weakening each time they are soaked in water. You can use a portable cleaning system for this approach or you can hire commercial carpet cleaners that use truck-mounted cleaning systems.
Dry Cleaning
This method is also called dry compound extraction. It entails sprinkling a dry (powder) cleaning agent onto the carpet before using a brush or other mechanical device to beat the carpet fibers until the dirt therein is absorbed by the cleaning compound. A vacuum is then used to remove the cleaning compound that has now absorbed all the dirt in the carpet.
Some people prefer to add a mist of a liquid cleaning compound in order to remove embedded grime. However, the dry compound is usually sufficient to clean your carpets. You have a choice between using natural cleaning compounds or polymeric ones, or a combination of both kinds.
Those concerned about the environment should pick the natural compounds. Dry cleaning is also good for maintaining the pristine condition of your carpets because it hardly uses any water during the cleaning process. Water quickens the aging process because it can cause the carpet fibers to become detached from the carpet, thereby leading the carpet to deteriorate or age.
It makes no sense to invest a sizeable amount of money when buying carpets, only to use cleaning methods that accelerate the aging of those carpets. Use the methods above and your investment will be preserved for a very long time. For more tips or assistance, consult local companies like Kelwin Coastal Carpets.

My yard is in the shade of both of my neighbour's homes for most of the day which makes it quite hard to grow some of my favourite plants. Even though the yard is shady I still want it to have some nice look ground cover and be a cool place to entertain people. I have used a combination of shade resistant plants and pavers to create a lovely space that is good for entertaining all year round. This blog has some tips on creating a pleasant atmosphere in your shady backyard, particularly if you have a yard that is too shady to grow many kinds of plants.
