Keeping the Fragrance Alive: 3 Tips for Storing Perfume in Storage Units

Home & Garden Blog

Having the right type of perfume on can completely transform your day. Studies suggest that 75% of all emotions are actually triggered by your sense of smell, which is closely linked to pleasure, well-being, emotion and memory. It's no wonder why many people love to collect perfume. If there is not enough storage space available at your home, you can store your perfume in rented storage units. But perfume is extremely delicate and fragile. So here are 3 tips to follow to keep the fragrance alive and strong while in storage.

Keep the Bottles Sealed

Most perfumes are alcohol-based, which means that they have an especially rapid rate of evaporation if the perfume is exposed to the air. This can cause the scent of your perfume to change significantly. If your perfume is contained in spray bottles, you should avoid opening the perfume, as it is already has a very limited access to air.

If your perfume is contained in a bottle with a stopper rather than a spray top, you want to make sure that the lid is secured tightly when packing it away for storage. Some experts recommend wrapping tape around the lid to further prevent exposure to air.

Store in a Climate Controlled Facility with a Constant Temperature and Relative Humidity

The ingredients contained within perfumes are extremely delicate and fragile. To prevent them from degrading, keep all perfumes in a climate controlled self storage facility that is kept at a constant temperature and relative humidity. Most collectors recommend keeping the storage units at a temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Keep a thermometer in the storage unit to measure the temperature of the room. This way, you'll also be alerted if the temperature control units are not functioning properly.

Use Opaque Bottles

If the perfume is stored in clear bottles, consider transferring it to an opaque bottle instead if you are concerned about preserving the integrity of the fragrance. Frosted or wholly opaque bottles are able to better protect the perfume by preventing light from reacting with the fragrance ingredients. Keep the perfume in their original boxes if possible to further keep light away.

Conclusion

It's not unusual for avid perfume collectors to have hundreds upon hundreds of bottles of perfume. But finding sufficient storage space at home can be tricky. Serious collectors often rent out self storage units so that their collection can be kept at a safe place undisturbed.
