Creating The Perfect Outdoor Space Ready For Summer

Construction & Contractors Blog

There are few things more ingrained in traditional Australian life than the great outdoors. With summer fast approaching, there has never been a better time for clearing out the weeds, making trips to the garden centre and creating the perfect outdoor space. Verandahs make great additions to the garden and are just perfect for family gatherings and entertaining during the warmer months of the year.

Verandah considerations

Verandahs come in many different styles, but they are typically constructed from timber. Offering shade and shelter and creating an attractive feature in the garden, it is easy to see why verandahs are more popular than ever. Most homeowners choose to erect their verandah close to their property on a patio or deck. It's a great area to place garden furniture such as a dining table or rattan seating.  Easy access to the verandah from the house will ensure entertaining is a breeze, especially if dinner is being served.

Getting The Best From Verandahs

Verandahs are used in different ways across the country. Some homeowners choose to install a glass roof within their verandah to protect guests from the rain. Others choose to plant climbing plants to create interest and vegetative covering. Jasmine and clematis are wonderful climbing plants that will look beautiful and create wonderful scents during the evening.

Depending on the material you choose for your verandah, you may need to carry out a little maintenance each year. Timber verandahs, for example, will need a lick of paint or timber preservative to keep them looking their best all year round.

Verandahs Aren't Just For Entertaining Either

Verandahs are quite versatile in their construction and offer a number of different purposes. Verandahs make great carports, for example, and will ensure your vehicle is protected from the elements and nasty things such as bird droppings. If you have a small business or a hobby that requires you to be working outside, verandahs also offer you protection when working or doing what you love best. In fact, with a little thinking outside of the box, you can almost turn your verandah into a workshop. Why not add a roof, or install boarded walls on which to keep your tools?

With so many great uses and styles, it is easy to see why verandahs are commonplace in the Australian garden or yard. Why not invest in one this summer and ensure you have the perfect place to entertain this year?

Shade friendly plants and pavers for your patio

My yard is in the shade of both of my neighbour's homes for most of the day which makes it quite hard to grow some of my favourite plants. Even though the yard is shady I still want it to have some nice look ground cover and be a cool place to entertain people. I have used a combination of shade resistant plants and pavers to create a lovely space that is good for entertaining all year round. This blog has some tips on creating a pleasant atmosphere in your shady backyard, particularly if you have a yard that is too shady to grow many kinds of plants.
