Home & Garden Blog

When looking for tips on how to best keep your house secure, there's no better choice than to ask a professional locksmith. With years of training and expertise in the field of home security, locksmiths are can offer you professional advice on home security. Whether you've just bought your first house or are just looking for tips on strengthening your home security, here are three tips that you could follow with your locksmith to feel much safer in your own home.

Rekey locks of recently purchased homes

Make sure that you replace or at least rekey the locks of the house. This should be your primary focus once you set foot in your new house. The reason for this is that the previous owners could have easily given spare copies of house keys to friends, neighbours, or family. If that is the case, any of those people will still have access to the house and could enter your premises at any time during the day.

To prevent strangers from having unrestricted access to your house, you could choose to replace or rekey the house locks. Replacing them can be quite pricey and it is more time-consuming than rekeying, but it offers the maximum amount of security. If you don't have the time and money to go through a lock replacing process, have a locksmith come in and rekey the locks.

Purchase deadbolt locks

It's also highly recommended to consider purchasing deadbolt locks and installing them on your door in order to highly boost the security of your house. However, you must not attempt to install them yourself unless you have proper knowledge in this domain. Improperly installed deadbolts are even less secure than regular locks. Make sure to contact an experienced locksmith and have them install the deadbolt locks in order to make your home a safer place.

Do not try to hide keys in common places

If you have to leave the keys for family members, you should never hide them under common locations such as under the mat or in a flowerpot around the door. Every thief will know to look in these common hiding places and if they find the key, you are in trouble! Doormats, mailboxes, pots, planters, even fake rocks are common hiding locations that you must avoid storing your keys in. Instead, you could choose to give your key to trusted neighbours or consider hiding the keys in more unusual and protective hiding places such as secret compartments or near the back of the house.
