A Quick Buyer's Guide to Alternative Home Air Conditioning Choices

Home & Garden Blog

When it's time to install an air conditioner in your home, you can choose between central air, a split system, a portable unit, or a window unit, and you have many choices for each type of model as well. If you're not thinking of a central air conditioner, it's good to shop carefully for a different type of model so you know what to expect and so you ensure you choose one that will cool your space as expected. Note a few quick tips on how to choose something other than a central unit for your home.

1. Window air conditioner

When choosing a window unit, you still need something strong enough for your one room. The power of an air conditioner is measured in BTUs, or British Thermal Units. For example, a 1,000 square foot room requires 18,000 BTUs, but add to that power if the room is in direct sunlight or if you're putting the air conditioner in a kitchen or other area that gets warmer than average. Because a window unit is not typically very powerful, you may need to invest in a separate dehumidifier to keep your room comfortable.

2. Portable units

A portable unit can be taken with you when you change homes or just when you move from room to room. However, note that they usually come with a vent that needs to sit in a window so that the unit can vent warm air outside, so they may not work for basements or other areas without windows you can easily open. They also usually have a reservoir for humidity and condensation that needs to be emptied often, so don't assume a portable unit will be without needed maintenance and care. The recommended BTUs for portable units is typically 8,000 for a 200 square foot room.

3. Split system units

A split system or ductless unit is permanent, so it's not good for apartment dwellers, but one advantage to its installation is that your installer will typically run a separate electrical circuit to the unit and back to your home's circuit board. When choosing a window or portable unit, you need to know the electrical requirements for the unit and your home may not have the right wiring to provide the power it needs. Choose a split system unit if you know you'll need upgraded electrical wiring along with a new air conditioning unit so this gets installed at the same time.
