The choice to have a home air purifier installed may be an easy one, but what may not be easy to swallow is having to buy replacement filters. These filters cause waste to not only your bank account but also to your local landfills. Instead, you can opt for a reusable air purifier filter. Before you start using one, make sure you know the do's and don'ts associated with them.
Do Set-Up a Routine Cleaning Day
When you use regular filters, you have a day to change them out based on the manufacturer recommendations. This is usually marked on the filter package, and some manufacturers even include a reminder sticker to put on your calendar or refrigerator. You may not have this with a reusable option. Make sure when you install your reusable filter to mark the calendar for one month later. Clean the filter on or around this date and every month to ensure a clean filter and a routine schedule.
Do Use a Mild Detergent
Your filter will pick up pet hair, dander, dirt, and dust throughout the course of the month. Though a warm water rinse will remove some of this debris, using a mild detergent will also help to break up oils and release more dirt from the filters. If you don't want to use a mild detergent, consider using a natural solution of vinegar and water instead.
Don't Use Essential Oils
With the increase in use of essential oils for everything from health to making the room smell better, you may consider using them on your air purifier filters. Resist this urge. The oils can trap dirt and may be more difficult to remove over time. They may also clog the filter, causing issues with your air purifier. Instead, opt for an essential oil diffuser or water based air purifer that uses scented drops to freshen the air.
Don't Put the Filter in Wet
Before you just rinse it off and toss the air filter back in the air purifier, take a second to dry it off. Putting the air filter back wet can cause issues with the air purifer like clogs or mould on the filter itself. If you aren't sure that a towel is drying off the filter properly, consider using a paper towel to remove excess dampness.
If you aren't sure what cleaning methods or solutions work best for your reusable filter, make sure to check with the manufacturer before cleaning.

My yard is in the shade of both of my neighbour's homes for most of the day which makes it quite hard to grow some of my favourite plants. I have used a combination of shade resistant plants and pavers to create a lovely space that is good for entertaining all year round. This blog has some tips on creating a pleasant atmosphere in your shady backyard, particularly if you have a yard that is too shady to grow many kinds of plants.
